Shipping costs :
We will look for a competitive quote when we
have the books ready to ship. Rates vary, but a quote from
17
November 2007, for 0.9 cubic meter (about 25 banker's boxes) was $658.00, as
follows:
- Freight including fuel surcharge : $123
- Bill of Lading, Handling Fees, Filing Fee, and GRI charges
: $145 (this cost is the same regardless of shipment size)
- "On Forwarding" (rail or truck, Mombassa to Kampala) : $390
As you can see, the cost from the port to
the destination city, dwarfs the cost of ocean transport itself.
The fixed costs per shipment are quite high, so it
makes
sense to send one big batch of books rather than two smaller ones.
I don't know what GRI stands for. This quote was from shipping-worldwide.com ; for ocean shipping to Mombasa, Kenya, and
then by rail.
The quote is for port-to-port shipping, for San Francisco to Kampala.
This means we will need to truck the boxes from Berkeley to
some
warehouse near the port of San Francisco, and in Kampala someone will
have to pick up the books at some warehouse and truck them to the
school.
Our previous shipment went to two schools in Sori, Kenya.
